Life Time Fitness officially announced plans to open its first club in California, while on the East Coast, Life Time pulled out of plans to open another club.

The Chanhassen, MN-based company began construction last Friday on a club in Laguna Niguel, CA, in Orange County on the site of a former expo center that closed in 2009.

The 127,000-square-foot club will include more than 400 pieces of cardio and resistance training equipment and multiple dedicated group exercise, Pilates, cycling, and LifePower Yoga studios. Life Time Athletic Laguna Niguel also will feature large indoor and outdoor aquatics centers that will include two-story outdoor waterslides, large, zero-depth entry recreation pools, lap pools and children?s interactive play areas, two whirlpools and an outdoor bistro. A preview center of the club is expected to open in fall 2013.

Earlier this month, Life Time submitted plans for a 120,000-square-foot club in Roseville, CA.

Life Time ended plans to build its third club in New Jersey and the first one in the Philadelphia area, according to a report in PhillyBurbs.com. Life Time had received approval to build the club in Mount Laurel, NJ, last April.

Plans for the 102,442-square-foot club ended after a dispute between Life Time and landowner Mount Laurel Development. Life Time spokesperson Lauren Flinn told the website that the developer failed to meet one of the conditions of the contract.

?We gave them an extension twice, and they still didn?t come through,? said Flinn, adding there are no plans to add another Life Time club in the region.

South Laurel Mayor Jim Keenan told the website that approvals for the project are valid for three years, should Life Time and the developer decide to resume their partnership.
