Bonanza of black holes, hot DOGs: NASA's WISE survey uncovers millions of black holes

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mission has led to a bonanza of newfound supermassive black holes and extreme galaxies called hot DOGs, or dust-obscured galaxies.

Images from the telescope have revealed millions of dusty black hole candidates across the universe and about 1,000 even dustier objects thought to be among the brightest galaxies ever found. These powerful galaxies, which burn brightly with infrared light, are nicknamed hot DOGs.

"WISE has exposed a menagerie of hidden objects," said Hashima Hasan, WISE program scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "We've found an asteroid dancing ahead of Earth in its orbit, the coldest star-like orbs known and now, supermassive black holes and galaxies hiding behind cloaks of dust."

WISE scanned the whole sky twice in infrared light, completing its survey in early 2011. Like night-vision goggles probing the dark, the telescope captured millions of images of the sky. All the data from the mission have been released publicly, allowing astronomers to dig in and make new discoveries.

The latest findings are helping astronomers better understand how galaxies and the behemoth black holes at their centers grow and evolve together. For example, the giant black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy, called Sagittarius A*, has 4 million times the mass of our sun and has gone through periodic feeding frenzies where material falls towards the black hole, heats up and irradiates its surroundings. Bigger central black holes, up to a billion times the mass of our sun, may even shut down star formation in galaxies.

In one study, astronomers used WISE to identify about 2.5 million actively feeding supermassive black holes across the full sky, stretching back to distances more than 10 billion light-years away. About two-thirds of these objects never had been detected before because dust blocks their visible light. WISE easily sees these monsters because their powerful, accreting black holes warm the dust, causing it to glow in infrared light.

"We've got the black holes cornered," said Daniel Stern of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., lead author of the WISE black hole study and project scientist for another NASA black-hole mission, the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR). "WISE is finding them across the full sky, while NuSTAR is giving us an entirely new look at their high-energy X-ray light and learning what makes them tick."

In two other WISE papers, researchers report finding what are among the brightest galaxies known, one of the main goals of the mission. So far, they have identified about 1,000 candidates.

These extreme objects can pour out more than 100 trillion times as much light as our sun. They are so dusty, however, that they appear only in the longest wavelengths of infrared light captured by WISE. NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope followed up on the discoveries in more detail and helped show that, in addition to hosting supermassive black holes feverishly snacking on gas and dust, these DOGs are busy churning out new stars.

"These dusty, cataclysmically forming galaxies are so rare WISE had to scan the entire sky to find them," said Peter Eisenhardt, lead author of the paper on the first of these bright, dusty galaxies, and project scientist for WISE at JPL. "We are also seeing evidence that these record setters may have formed their black holes before the bulk of their stars. The 'eggs' may have come before the 'chickens.'"

More than 100 of these objects, located about 10 billion light-years away, have been confirmed using the W.M. Keck Observatory on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, as well as the Gemini Observatory in Chile, Palomar's 200-inch Hale telescope near San Diego, and the Multiple Mirror Telescope Observatory near Tucson, Ariz.

The WISE observations, combined with data at even longer infrared wavelengths from Caltech's Submillimeter Observatory atop Mauna Kea, revealed that these extreme galaxies are more than twice as hot as other infrared-bright galaxies. One theory is their dust is being heated by an extremely powerful burst of activity from the supermassive black hole.

"We may be seeing a new, rare phase in the evolution of galaxies," said Jingwen Wu of JPL, lead author of the study on the submillimeter observations. All three papers are being published in the Astrophysical Journal.

The three technical journal articles, including PDFs, can be found at http://arxiv.org/abs/1205.0811, http://arxiv.org/abs/1208.5517 and http://arxiv.org/abs/1208.5518 .

JPL manages and operates WISE for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. The principal investigator, Edward Wright, is at UCLA. The mission was competitively selected under NASA's Explorers Program managed by the Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. The science instrument was built by the Space Dynamics Laboratory, Logan, Utah, and the spacecraft was built by Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., Boulder, Colo. Science operations and data processing and archiving take place at the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. Caltech manages JPL for NASA.

Michigan athletes compete in 2012 Paralympic Games ...

Paralyzed Veterans of America, Disabled American Veterans, and Military Order of the Purple Heart are three congressionally chartered veterans service organizations that support sports and recreation programs for military veterans for rehabilitation and fitness.

Some of the athletes that benefit from their programs are going to the London 2012 Paralympic Games that begin Wednesday and end Sept. 9.

PVA?s programs include the PVA Sports 32nd National Veterans Wheelchair Games that co-hosted 540 disabled U.S. military veteran athletes in June in Richmond, Va., with the Department of Veterans Affairs. The multi-event sports rehabilitation program is open to vets who use wheelchairs for sports competition due to spinal cord injuries, amputations or certain neurological problems, and who receive care at VA medical facilities or military treatment centers.

Competition includes air guns, archery, basketball, bowling, field, hand-cycling, nine-ball, motorized wheelchair relay, power soccer, quad rugby, softball, swimming, table tennis, track and field, trapshooting, weightlifting and wheelchair slalom.

Founded in 1946, PVA advocates for the rights of veterans and non-veterans who have disabilities, and focuses on spinal cord injury and disease. There are about 19,000 members.

PVA has a PVA-AWBA Bowling Tournament Series, a PVA-NWPA Billiards Tournament Series, a PVA Bass Tour, the PVA National Trapshoot and air rifle-air pistol competitions in locations all over the country. As part of the PVA Fitness and Wellness Program, the Paralyzed Veterans Racing Team has upcoming competitions in the Tour de La France in South Carolina; in the Pensacola Cycling Classic and in the Rims on the Run in Florida; and in the Army Ten Miler in Washington, D.C. Contact PVA Sports and Recreation at 1-800-424-8200, ext. 752 or 657, or Tom Brown at 817-225-2415.

Scot Severn, 44, of Caro, is the sports director for Michigan Paralyzed Veterans of America, based in Novi.

He is one of 20 U.S. military vets among the 227 disabled athletes named by the United States Olympic Committee to be part of the U.S. Paralympic Team competing in London. The team, that includes six guides for visually impaired athletes, comprises 133 men and 94 women.

Severn became partially paralyzed in 1989 when he was struck by lightning while on duty with the U.S. Army Reserves at Camp Grayling. He graduated from Saginaw Valley State, married in 1994, and is the father of three children. He plays rugby for the Michigan Storm team.

He competed in shot put and discus at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic games where he was seventh in discus and ninth in shot put. He set a personal record then, and threw a national record, and has since set a new personal record. He goes into his second Paralympic Games as the U.S. No. 1-ranked shot put, discus and javelin thrower. He also is first nationally in discus and javelin. In world ranking, he is No. 2 in shot put and in the top five in discus and javelin. Continued...

Severn hopes to be ready for the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

He does three-hour workouts every other day, plus has throwing practice, and says that military training helps athletes with sports training.

Severn has traveled the world competing with premier athletes in field events and has received wheelchair rugby Most Valuable Player awards, earned silver medals in the discus and shot at the Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, and holds numerous national records. He was the Michigan Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame?s Athlete of the Year for 2005.

In the track and field competition at the Paralympic Games, the United States is represented by 58 athletes making it the largest sport delegation for Team USA. Three of the athletes set world records at the 2012 U.S. Paralympic Trials ? Track and Field in Indianapolis.

There are 170 medal events ? 96 track, 70 field, and four road for 740 men and 360 women competitors at the Olympic Park ? Olympic Stadium (track and field) and The Mall (marathon.)

Severn?s teammates include a U.S. Navy vet from San Diego, and U.S. Army vets from Long Beach, Calif., Atlanta, Ga., and Pittsburgh, Pa. Athletics includes archery, cycling, fencing, rowing, shooting, sitting volleyball, soccer, swimming, wheelchair rugby, track and field, road running, cross-country running and race walking.

Paralympians are grouped into classes according to visual impairment and intellectual impairment such as traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, amputations or limb deficiencies, and for those using a wheelchair to compete.

Severn?s fellow veteran, U.S. Navy Lt. Bradley Snyder, who was blinded in Afghanistan, competes in swimming on the one-year anniversary of his injury.

The Paralympic Games has about 4,200 athletes in competition. Americans will take part in 19 contested areas. Additional sports are boccia, equestrian, goalball, judo, powerlifting, sailing, soccer seven-a-side, table tennis, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair fencing and wheelchair tennis.

At the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, Team USA claimed a total of 99 medals, finishing third overall. Nineteen Beijing medalists are going to London including 11 other Michigan natives. Continued...

The Paralympic Movement began in England. The ?para? in Paralympic means parallel (to the Olympics.)

VA Paralympic website

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs launched a website for its Paralympic program a year ago as part of the VA?s ongoing commitment to support the rehabilitation and recovery of disabled veterans through participation in adaptive sports that encourages independence, reduced dependency on pain and depression medication, and reduces stress. The site contains information on training allowances, the VA Paralympic Grant Program, and resources for caregivers and VA clinical personnel. It is at va.gov/adaptivesports.

The program provides Olympic standard training, equipment, coaching and logistics for regional sports events for veterans hospitals and disabled veterans support services throughout the U.S. In addition to $8 million in annual funding to operate the program, $2 million a year is available for grants to individual disabled veterans to pay for additional athletic training needs.

More than $4.4 million in funds from the VA was awarded to 95 community-based organizations in support of Paralympic sport and physical activity programs for disabled vets and disabled members of the armed forces. Grants ranging from $2,500 to $500,000 were provided to USOC partner organizations and community programs to increase the opportunities for disabled veterans to participate in physical activity within their home communities and in more Paralympic programs at the regional and national levels.

Veterans training in eligible adaptive sports can apply for a monthly assistance allowance through the Paralympics Program if they meet the qualifying military standard for that particular sport. A veteran may be eligible whether his or her disability is service-related or non-service-related.

Rehabilitation and sports clinic for vets

The National Veterans Summer Sports Clinic promotes rehabilitation of body and spirit by teaching summer sporting activities to veterans with significant physical or psychological impairments. The clinic offers such sports as surfing, sailing, kayaking, track and field, and cycling to veterans who are newly injured from amputations, traumatic brain injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder and other neurological disorders.

The National Veterans Golden Age Games is a national multi-event sports competition and recreational program designed to improve the quality of life for older vets. The program for veterans age 55 and older offers 14 different sports and recreational activities.

The Military Order of the Purple Heart helps to sponsor the National Veterans Golden Age Games. The 26th annual event took place last spring in St. Louis where the commander of MOPH Missouri Chapter 125 presented checks totaling $34,000, including a $30,000 grant from the MOPH Service Foundation, for transportation, food, equipment and supplies for the events. Continued...

MOPH formed in 1932 for the protection and mutual interest of veterans and active duty men and women who have received the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received in combat.

Winter sports clinic and competition

The National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic instructs veterans with disabilities in adaptive Alpine and Nordic skiing and introduces them to other adaptive recreational activities and sports. Vets who have spinal cord injuries, amputations, traumatic brain injuries, neurological challenges and visual impairments may participate.

Disabled American Veterans and the VA co-sponsored the 26th annual clinic at Snowmass Village, Colo., in March for more than 400 participants who drew on the qualities they demonstrated in uniform to try winter and other sports. The group included nine active-duty service members and 94 veterans of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The event ? that also involves rock climbing, scuba diving, trapshooting, wheelchair fencing, sled hockey and snowmobiling ? is called ?Miracle on a Mountainside.?

Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric K. Shinseki is a disabled veteran who lost part of his right foot in Vietnam. He praised the strides the veterans at the clinic have made in their recuperation.

?You may have been injured, but life isn?t over. There is still a lot of living to do for all of us,? Shinseki said. ?It will be different, no doubt. And you are going to have to work hard to improve functionality. But that is the challenge and the triumph, every day ? to keep on living while you are living.?

Donald Samuels is immediate past DAV national commander.

?You have all faced down challenges in your service to our country, and I am urging you to rekindle your fighting spirit and do the same with the hurdles you may face here,? Samuels said. ?Make it part of your healing process.?

Seventh annual DAV golf outing

The Disabled American Veterans Department of Michigan holds its seventh annual Thomas A. McMasters III DAV golf outing on Sept. 8 at Fern Hill Country Club at 17600 Clinton River Road in Clinton Township. Register by Friday for the scramble format play, which is $320 per team for 18 holes. There is a 9 a.m. shotgun start, and hole sponsorships are available. Call 1-888-448-2328 for more information. There is a DAV office at 17779 E. 14 Mile Road in Fraser and a DAV thrift store in Westland.

(AP) ? Couples from around the world are competing in the finals Argentina's annual tango competition, the highlight of a two-week festival which this year honored Astor Piazzolla, the legendary composer and bandoneonista who revived the genre and infuriated purists by blending tango with rock music in the 1970s.

Piazzolla died 20 years ago but tango is still growing in popularity as a unique form of music, poetry and dance. This year's festival showed the genre is still evolving, too ? from an under-25 orchestra that wowed the opening party to a group of five young Norwegians who interpreted the genre as if they were born in tango's birthplace on the shores of the Rio de la Plata, the wide river shared by Argentina and Uruguay where the genre first developed in the late 19th century.

Piazzolla's grandson, drummer Daniel Piazzolla, recreated with other musicians the Electronic Octet, a group his grandfather put together in the 1970s that shook the dust off a musical culture that had been stuck in the early 20th century. The elder Piazzolla's masterwork "Adios Nonino," combining his form of the accordion with jazz and dance, was restaged by choreographer Ana Maria Stekelman, who also served as a judge in the dance final.

In all, more than 2,000 artists converged on Buenos Aires for the two week cultural festival, which celebrated its 10th year this Argentine winter. Art exhibits, book readings, oral histories, and master classes offered free to the public by eight of the previous winning couples were among the highlights.

"This is an event which constantly offers surprises, bringing together the most exciting examples of the genre and betting on crossing over to new generations," said Gustavo Mozzi, the event's artistic director.

A total of 491 couples from 32 countries competed, with a final 42 pairs reaching Monday night's final in the Salon Tango competition.

Each man wore the couple's number pinned to the back of an elegant suit as he twirled a partner in a dazzling dress and high heels around the stage in the Luna Park stadium. Competition rules require the couple to maintain physical contact while the music plays, while moving constantly in a counter-clockwise direction. Acrobatic swoops, swirls and passionate clutches are encouraged, but must be contained within the precise style of traditional tango: the competitors may not lift their legs above their knees.

Sixteen pairs from around the world challenged the Argentines in the Salon final, including three couples from Russia, two from Colombia and two from the U.S. The other finalists made it from Belgium, Canada, Chile, Japan, Mexico, Portugal, Singapore, Uruguay and Venezuela.

The winners walk away with prizes including $8,600 dollars in cash, but more importantly, fame and the respect of tango fans worldwide.

After Monday night's Salon Tango final comes Tuesday's final in the Stage Tango competition, which invites dancers to incorporate other dance forms.

Gay, Older, and Dating | Psychology Today

This blog post was written by Dr. Douglas Haldeman, an internationally renowned expert on gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) issues. He has a?full time independent practice in Seattle, Washington which encompasses the LGBT communities and their relationship to mainstream American culture. Dr. Haldeman has contributed to the American Psychological Association (APA)'s work on LGBT issues, including the APA?Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Clients.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Haldeman!

I am lucky to be a veteran of 40+ years of living as an out gay man and a psychologist in the LGBT community.? Living in the San Francisco area in the Seventies, I enjoyed the Disco Revolution; I marched with Harvey Milk; I sat bedside during the Eighties and Nineties at the deaths of countless patients and friends; and I did my part to rebuild our community in the ?00s, and have thankfully lived to tell the tale.? If you are reading this, you may be an older gay, lesbian, trans or bisexual person ? which in our community could be anyone over 40 ? and looking for love.

Let me first say that if you are looking for a one-nighter, fair enough: many older queer folk are not interested in a long-term relationship (LTR), or even dating, for a number of reasons.? Perhaps you have left or lost a partner, and are not up for the complexities of an LTR.? Or maybe you are simply too accustomed to the independence of single life.? Whatever the reason, by this stage in life, you know where to find what you need: online hookup sites (Scruff, Grindr, Manhunt, Adam4Adam, Craiglist) or the more traditional in-person, impersonal venues.

If you are interested in dating, though, and the possibility of finding an LTR ? either again, or for the first time ? read on.? This post is dedicated to Boomers/Seniors looking for relationships, and many of the recommendations that apply to heterosexuals work for us too (see below).?But for LGBT Boomers/Seniors, there are some unique considerations in the mature quest for love.? As a psychologist who has worked with LGBT people from all generational cohorts for thirty years, I have some ideas that may help you in your search:

1. Know what you want, and focus accordingly:

These days, because of the Internet, it is much easier to connect with like-minded people in terms of dating.? Consider where you are in your life, and what you want: is it an LTR?? Casual dating?? Friendship?? What kind of people are you attracted to?? Those in your own generation, or others?? Be honest with yourself and others.? Engage with those whose relational goals are similar.

2. Stay open:

Be flexible in your ?requirements?.? Also, be flexible in your choice of venues.? For instance, do you remember what it was like before computers ?back in the day? when we actually met in person?? Go to bars; if you don?t like them, or don?t enjoy alcohol-saturated environments, join community groups; volunteer for LGBT causes.? If you live in a rural area where these options are not available, use your computer to connect ? or take a deep breath and try and start a club/interest group where you live.

3. Focus on what is under your control, and leave the rest:

Are there demons in your head, telling you that you?re too old/too fat/too washed-up to find a loving relationship?? Don?t do that to yourself; these thoughts must be confronted and replaced with positive thoughts, because they will not help you feel confident in your presentation to others.? Are you comfortable in your own body?? If not, lose weight and get in shape.? It helps.? Regardless of your age or ability status, everyone can find something active that they like to do.? Be content with who you are and what you have, and it will be much easier feel good about yourself when you meet others ? of any age.

4. Be honest:

You know by now that ours is a youth-obsessed community, and it is easy for older people to feel invisible or marginalized.? Don?t buy into that; if you are patient, and sure of yourself, you will meet your Prince or Princess.? But you can?t lie, especially on the Internet, where lying seems to be the lingua franca of communicating.? Tell the truth about yourself (age, weight, SES, whatever) ? you know that whomever you are interested in is going to find out the truth sooner or later.? Be up-front and you?ll feel better about your communications.

5. Don?t despair: there is a market for everyone:

So you think you are over the hill, and that no beautiful person will ever look at you again?? Think again.? It?s easy to worry about that (see above), but don?t allow yourself to go there.? It will not help you achieve anything, and will erode your self-esteem.? Be vigilant against toxic thinking!? Attend community groups where the participation of older LGBT people is valued; if you go out, visit bars/clubs/coffehouses that have mixed-age clientelte.? And online?? There are good resources available for meeting people form all over the world who admire us older folk: Silverdaddies and Caffmoscommunity are a couple of reputable sites.

6. MOST OF ALL, EMBRACE YOUR AGE:

You are likely used to feeling that being over 40 is a deficit in our community.? If you are indeed over 40, challenge that thought: you cannot change your age, but you can change your attitude about it.? You are mature; you have wisdom; life experience; and a lot to offer.? Make your self-talk more positive with activities that bolster your confidence.? Get to the gym.? Hang out with your friends.? Make time for the things that enhance your self-care, whatever they may be, and for God?s sake, stop working so hard.? And if you don?t want to be in a relationship after all?? Absolutely fine.? We are gay, after all; we have already broken the boundaries of heterocentric social expectations (in plain English: social norms of living like straight people), so if you are more comfortable as a single person, good for you.? Let it be.

7. Follow the basic recommendations for straight Boomers/Seniors:

Some of these apply to us, and let?s start with safe sex.? In the past few years, the CDC has reported an alarming increase in new HIV infections in gay men over 50 ? an age cohort that has survived the initial wave of the health crisis.? What?s going on?? My theory is that so many of us older guys feel invisible, or just generally bad about ourselves, that we are willing to accept any kind of sexual attention, even if it is unsafe ? especially if we have had too much to drink.? Don?t do it.? You know the rules of safe sex by now, and if you don?t, there is another blog on this site that will spell it out.? Follow the rules for online dating that straight people endorse: get to know someone, be slow to trust them, meet informally and publicly at the beginning, etc.? That is covered on this site as well.

8. Use the resources dedicated to online dating for gay Boomers/Seniors:

There are a number of reputable websites that offer advice, resources, social alternatives, and online communities for connecting with other LGBT Boomers/Seniors as those people who are interested in getting to know us better.? They include the AARP?s page for gay online dating, OutMaturity, and FromGaytoDecember.? Check them out.

Last but not least, enjoy yourself!? This can be an amazing time of life.? After all, we have survived (paraphrasing Gloria Gaynor), and as time goes by, we understand how precious life is.? Embrace your age and accept whatever health challenges you may have.? Put yourself out there.? Chances are, someone is waiting.

GOP Lawmaker's Insensitive Email

A Republican state senator in Tennessee has been stripped of a key subcommittee chairmanship after sending an offensive email about the legislative Black Caucus.

On Wednesday evening, Sen. Jim Summerville (R-Dickson) sent an email to Rep. Barbara Cooper (D-Memphis) saying he did "not give a rat's a--" what the Black Caucus thought of a report released by his subcommittee regarding Tennessee State University. Summerville apparently sent his message from a private Prodigy email account.

WRCBTV.com reported that Summerville subsequently said he believes he should have used different wording in his email to Cooper, but he continued to stand by his remark:

Earlier Summerville told reporters in a brief interview that perhaps he should have said he didn't give a "rat's posterior" about the black caucus concerns, rather than the cruder word he used in his one-line email sent this week.

Asked why he so rudely dismissed the black caucus response to hearings about a grading dispute at Tennessee State University, Summerville said "the matter speaks for itself."

The email responded to a Black Caucus report saying that the subcommittee was inaccurate to conclude that Tennessee State University had given African-American students incompletes in order to keep state funding. A new state higher education funding formula bases funding on total graduates instead of total student headcount.

Sen. Dolores Gresham (R-Sommerville), the education committee chairwoman, announced Summerville's dismissal from the subcommittee post on Thursday, the Tennessean reported. Summerville resigned from the Education Committee on Friday but did not give a reason in a letter to Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey (R).

Summerville, an instructor at Austin Peay State University, was elected to the Senate in 2010. He is the author of five books including "Educating Black Doctors: A History of Meharry Medical College" and "With Kennedy and Other Stories." He is also the founder of the Theodore Association Police Award for Nashville and Middle Tennessee.

Michael Jackson's nephew made co-guardian

By Alex Dobuzinskis, Reuters

From left, Blanket, Prince and Paris Jackson

LOS ANGELES ??A judge on Wednesday finalized an arrangement for Michael Jackson's nephew to serve as co-guardian of the late pop star's three children along with the kids' grandmother, who until recently had been solely responsible for their care.

The decision by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff follows recent turmoil inside the famous family over the pop star's estate after grandmother Katherine Jackson was reported missing. She later turned up in Arizona with her eldest daughter and other family members.

But due to her absence from her Los Angeles home, T.J. Jackson, 34, the nephew of the "Thriller" singer, was made temporary co-guardian of Prince, 15, Paris, 14, and Blanket, 10. Beckloff's ruling on Wednesday formalized his position while Katherine Jackson, 82, remains primary guardian.

"It's clear to me the children have a very strong, loving relationship with T.J. Jackson," Beckloff said.

Katherine Jackson's absence last month coincided with a letter sent by several Jackson siblings, including Janet, Randy and Rebbie, to the administrators of the pop star's estate challenging the validity of Jackson's will.

The will placed Jackson's estate under the administration of Los Angeles music executive John McClain and attorney John Branca, and it named Katherine Jackson and the pop star's three children as beneficiaries.

The estate, which includes rights to music and merchandise, generates millions in revenue annually and the administrators each receive lucrative fees for their work.

The dispute and Katherine's absence raised questions about her competence, and there were even accusations she may have been kidnapped by her adult children.

But Wednesday, Katherine Jackson's attorney, Sandra Ribera, reaffirmed that the grandmother is in control and approved of the decision to have T.J. Jackson act as co-guardian.

"Mrs. Jackson is a well-informed, strong woman who makes her own decisions and can't be influenced by anyone when it comes to these children," she said.

In a sworn declaration submitted to the court earlier this month, Katherine Jackson said she did not know her grandchildren were trying to reach her while she was away for about 10 days at a spa in Tucson, Ariz.

Scientists shed light on glowing materials

Monday, August 20, 2012

Researchers at King's College London, in collaboration with European research institutes ICFO (Barcelona) and AMOLF (Amsterdam), have succeeded in mapping how light behaves in complex photonic materials inspired by nature, like iridescent butterfly wings. Scientists have broken the limit of light resolution at the nanoscale and delivered a fundamental insight into how light and matter interact, which could lead to the development of enhanced bio-sensors for healthcare and more efficient solar cells and displays.

Optical measurements of light waves at the nanoscale have always been limited by the resolution of the optical microscope, but researchers were able to break this limit using a new technique which combines electronic excitation and optical detection, to explore the inside of a photonic crystal and study the confinement of light. Working with a spatial resolution of 30 nanometers, scientists examined the structures at a resolution more than ten times smaller than the diffraction limit for light, revealing a greater understanding of how light interacts with matter to create, for example, the visible iridescence phenomena observed in nature on the wings of butterflies.

Dr Riccardo Sapienza, from the Department of Physics at King's, said: 'We were thrilled in the lab to observe the finer details of the photonic crystals that were simply inaccessible before. This is very important as it allows scientists to test optical theories to a new level of accuracy, fully characterise new optical materials and test new optical devices.'

The collaborative research has been published in the journal Nature Materials.

The team constructed an artificial two-dimensional photonic crystal by etching a hexagonal pattern of holes in a very thin silicon nitride membrane. Photonic crystals are nanostructures in which two materials with different refractive indices are arranged in a regular pattern, giving rise to exotic optical properties. Natural photonic crystals can be found in certain species of butterflies, birds and beetles as well as in opal gemstones where they give rise to beautiful shimmering colours.

The photonic crystal inhibits light propagation for certain colours of light, which leads to strong reflection of those colours, as observed when such materials 'catch the light'. By leaving out one hole, a very small cavity can be defined where the surrounding crystal acts as a mirror for the light, making it possible to strongly confine it within a so-called 'crystal defect cavity'.

The scientists based their research methods on a technique used in geology, called cathodoluminescence, whereby a beam of electrons is generated by an electron gun and impacted on a luminescent material, causing the material to emit visible light. Professor Albert Polman and his group in AMOLF modified this technique to access nanophotonics materials. He said: 'In the past few years we have worked hard with several technicians and researchers to develop and refine this new instrument.'

Dr Sapienza said: 'Each time a single electron from the electron gun reaches the sample surface it generates a burst of light as if we had placed a fluorescent molecule at the impact location. Scanning the electron beam we can visualise the optical response of the nanostructure revealing features 10 times smaller than ever done before.'

Professor Niek van Hulst, ICFO, said: 'It is fascinating to finally have an immediate view of the light in all its colours inside a photonic crystal. For years we have been struggling with scanning near-field probes and positioning of nano-light-sources. Now the scanning e-beam provides a local broad-band dipolar light source that readily maps all localised fields inside a photonic crystal cavity.'

With major advances in nanofabrication techniques it has become possible to construct artificial photonic crystals with optical properties that can be accurately engineered. These structures can be used to make high-quality nanoscale optical waveguides and cavities, which are important in telecommunication and sensing applications.

Dr Sapienza said: 'Our research provides a fundamental insight into light at the nanoscale and, in particular, helps in understanding how light and matter interact. This is the key to advance nanophotonic science and it can be useful to design novel optical devices like enhanced bio-sensors for healthcare, more efficient solar cells and displays, or novel quantum optics and information technologies.'

The Feds Are Garnishing Social Security Benefits ... - Business Insider

While most attention in the ongoing student debt crisis narrative has focused on new graduates, it turns out the federal government has been quietly targeting a different group of debtors: retirees.?

The Treasury Department has been withholding as much as 15 percent of Social Security benefits from "a rapidly growing number of Social Security recipients who have fallen behind on federal student loans," Smart Money's Annamaria Andriotis reports:

"From January through August 6, the government reduced the size of roughly 115,000 retirees' Social Security checks on those grounds. That's nearly double the pace of the department's enforcement in 2011; it's up from around 60,000 cases in all of 2007 and just 6 cases in 2000...

The amount that the government withholds varies widely, though it runs up to 15%. Assuming the average monthly Social Security benefit for a retired worker of $1,234, that could mean a monthly haircut of almost $190."

Since 2001, the number of retirees who've seen benefits garnished has ballooned from about 20,000 to nearly 100,000. The worst part? Some of these retirees are simply among the growing number of older consumers who've taken on loans to help their kids or grandchildren through college.

A recent report by the New York Federal Reserve found more than 17 percent of student loan borrowers are over the age of 50.?

And while slates for credit and other forms of debt can be wiped clean in bankruptcy, lawmakers have yet to add student loan debt to the list.?

Still, simply owning study loans in old age doesn't automatically put retiree's benefits on the fed's chopping block.?

"It's when people aren't making any attempt whatsoever [to pay] that they start heading down that road," Treasury Department spokesman Justin Hamilton said.

Young Undocumented Immigrants May Find College Elusive

MIAMI -- Araceli Cortes had made up her mind: After being brought to the U.S. as a child, graduating from high school and attending some college in California, she was going to return to Mexico to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor.

She quit her job, bought an airline ticket and reserved a seat to take a medical school entrance exam.

Then, a week before her departure, President Barack Obama announced that young undocumented immigrants like Cortes would be given the chance to remain in the United States and obtain a work visa. Cortes canceled her ticket and decided to stay.

This week, she and thousands of other immigrants began the application process. But she and many other student immigrants could face some tough obstacles.

"It's not giving me much," Cortes, 20, said. "It's just a two-year permit."

Obama was clear in announcing the order: This was not a path to citizenship, but rather an opportunity to avoid deportation and work.

For the students who are undocumented immigrants and have graduated from college, the new policy means they will have the opportunity to work in their field of study, something they could only do as independent contractors or unpaid interns before.

For younger immigrants like Cortes - as many as 65,000 of whom are estimated to graduate from high school each year - some barriers to earning a college degree will be removed. The main hurdle, however, will remain cost. Federal loans and grants, the largest source of aid for college students, require students to have a green card or U.S. citizenship.

"There's still going to be a challenge for these students to pursue higher education," said Deborah Santiago, co-founder and vice president for policy and research of Excelencia in Education. "I don't think the numbers are going to be high."

Children who are undocumented immigrants have been guaranteed the right to a K-12 education since the 1982 Plyler v. Doe Supreme Court decision.

A growing number of those students are now entering adolescence and early adulthood. They speak English, are part of after-school clubs and sports, and have the same aspirations to attend college as their peers. Yet around the age of 16, they stop having the same opportunities. When most teens get a driver's license, a first job and start thinking about college, illegal immigrant students start to become aware of their status.

"They stay stuck while their friends are moving forward," said Roberto Gonzales, a sociologist at the University of Chicago. "And that has tremendous implications on their own ability to achieve any upward mobility, on issues of self-esteem and on emotional and mental well-being."

The Plyler v. Doe ruling did not address higher education. Rather, individual states and colleges have set their own policies on whether to allow illegal immigrants to attend.

Among undocumented immigrants who are high school graduates between the ages of 18 to 24, 49 percent are in or have attended some college, compared with 76 percent of legal immigrants and 71 percent of U.S.-born residents, according to a Pew Hispanic Center study of 2008 census data.

Jane Slater, who teaches English as a second language at a high school in Redwood City, Calif., said fewer than half of the students who are illegal immigrants at her school go to college.

"There's that sort of hopeless feeling of `Why go?'" she said.

The price of tuition and fees increased 439 percent between 1982 and 2007, while the median family income rose 147 percent, according to the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education. Parent and student loans, grants and scholarships help the average student pay about 55 percent of the cost, according to a report by Sallie Mae, the largest private lender to students.

Students with no legal status in the U.S. have access to just a slice of those resources. Selected private scholarships are often very competitive because of the limited number available. In a few states, they also qualify for state aid. But in most, they end up having to pay significantly higher tuition. Only 12 states allow undocumented immigrants to pay in-state rates.

The majority of those who do enroll attend community colleges but often can afford only one or two classes a semester, or may have to take breaks in order to work full time. That means it takes significantly longer for them to graduate.

Katharine Gin, co-founder and executive director for the Education for Fair Consideration, is optimistic more scholarships from corporations and other funders will become available.

"They were moved by their stories. They felt like they deserved things but said, `How can I justify putting money to these students when they cannot work in the end?'" Gin said. "I think that will change."

Cortes took AP classes in high school and was accepted to every University of California school she applied to. And while California is one of the states that allow undocumented immigrants to pay in-state tuition, she said it was still too expensive. A private school offered her a $14,000 scholarship, but that would have covered only half the annual costs.

She decided to go to community college instead and found a full-time job as a cashier at a car wash to help pay. Like at many community colleges, the classes she needs to enroll in to study medicine - biology, chemistry - fill up quickly and to get in, she needs a higher credit standing. That means taking classes in other subjects, essentially paying for courses that will have little to do with her medical degree.

Frustrated, she started looking for other options. Her father, who lives in Mexico, helped her fill out the paperwork to apply for a medical school there, but because she canceled her plane ticket, she lost her seat for the exam and won't be able to take it again.

Cortes has read through dozens of news articles online and recorded Obama's speech on the White House lawn, watching it repeatedly and trying to figure out what to do.

"He was very specific in saying, Don't think the wrong way about this," she said. "This is nothing for residency or citizenship."

Cortes went to the Mexican Consulate, which put her in touch with an organization, Dream in Mexico, that helps students find educational opportunities in Mexico. She applied to El Tecnologico de Monterrey and is waiting for a reply.

If she gets accepted and is given a scholarship to cover her fees, she's leaning toward going, even though she applied to stay in this country.

Cortes figures she'll save time, money and could still end up practicing medicine one day in the United States.

"As much as I want to stay here and be with my family, I have to think of the future," she said. "I have to think what's best for me."

  • What is Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals?

Deferred action temporarily prevents deportation of an individual that resides in the United States without a lawful immigration status. <u>It does not give or result in lawful status</u> for the individual, and can be terminated or renewed at the discretion of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Deferred action does not excuse any past or future period of unlawful presence, however, individuals whose requests are accepted will not increase their unlawful presence in the country while under the action. Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals is a new directive introduced by the Obama Administration on June 15, 2012. The policy shift will allow individuals unlawfully brought into the U.S. as children, and who meet certain guidelines, to apply for two years of deferred action subject to renewal and termination at the discretion of the DHS. Once deferred action has been granted, individuals qualify to obtain work authorization in the United States if he or she can prove "an economic necessity for employment." Those applying must meet all specified guidelines, but decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis. <a href="http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.eb1d4c2a3e5b9ac89243c6a7543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=f2ef2f19470f7310VgnVCM100000082ca60aRCRD&vgnextchannel=f2ef2f19470f7310VgnVCM100000082ca60aRCRD" target="_hplink">Source: USCIS</a>

  • Who Is Eligible?

Individuals currently in removal proceedings, with final orders for removal or with voluntary departure orders, qualify as long as they are not in immigration detention. IT Outsourcing 3.0? | Thoughts on Cloud Blog

I probably first heard the term Web 2.0 around 2005, and having come from a technical background where version/release/modification (VRM) was typically only used in the context of software version control, seeing it applied to something that was conceptual or at best used to describe common attributes of a set of ?things? was new to me.

Equally there is a re-emerging trend now in the consumer markets to adopt this too ? Windows 8, iPhone 5, iPad 3 ?no sorry, the new iPad?.ah , we seem to have stopped again now!

Where am I going with this? While on the Cloud Social Media Residency in Raleigh, N.C., earlier this year, I had what I thought was a eureka moment ? cloud from my perspective is part of the evolution of IT outsourcing. If this is true, is cloud actually Outsourcing 3.0? Surely nobody has invented the term ?Outsourcing 3.0?, let alone adopted it yet?

I?ve been working in IT outsourcing for IBM for almost 20 years now, and have watched it evolve. This is how I would describe simplistically the various ?versions? of IT outsourcing at the infrastructure level (as opposed to application development) over the years:

Outsourcing Versions Time Period Attributes
?1.0? Late 1980s to early 2000s Squarely in the IT Department?s domain. Typically outsourced to a specialized service provider in a domestic market. Initially data centre centric, outsourcing management of mainframes to service providers. By the mid 1990s, distributed systems, service desks, end user devices were part of the portfolio scope.
?2.0? Early 2000s to present day Still in the IT Department?s domain. The trend in this phase was to outsource to service providers with offshore capability to primarily further reduce cost of IT. Offshoring became synonymous with outsourcing. Emergence of higher value outsourcing away from the data centre ? Business Process Management/Outsourcing.
?3.0? Present day to 2025? Business engagement directly with Service Providers, rather than purely in the IT Department?s domain. IT Department shifting from being a Service Provider to an Service Integrator or broker. Trend towards moving workloads and data into the Cloud. IT as a Service.
?4.0? 2025? to ?. True IT as a utility. Ubiquitous. Global standards.

I then set about doing doing some research; surely Google won?t have indexed the term ?IT Outsourcing 3.0? , my blog will be the first?.

Well, what do you know only 2 pages of results ? not bad.

The first hit is about a lecture scheduled for ?Agile 2012? in Dallas, Texas discussing Agile development in context of offshoring (Outsourcing 3.0: The Agile Way):

?Agile has impacted the way modern offshore service providers operate. The new modes of cooperation are emerging. Some people call it ?clients? owned teams?, the others prefer the name ?virtual captive?. I like calling it ?Outsourcing 3.0?.

Why 3.0? Because I see that offshore software development is entering a new era. Finally, the era of Agility.?

Based on this, the speaker?s definition and mine are not dissimilar if we apply to an infrastructure context. Cloud enables the same principles of agility ? we quickly provision infrastructure to prototype ideas and demonstrate capability to the business.

The next series of hits didn?t yield much ? the label ?IT Outsourcing 3.0? has used, but the writers have not defined this ? seems more of a marketing term in job advertisements.

The next hit was a blog entry ? titled ?The Hidden Question Behind Cloud Computing? from 2009, which I think seeks to debunk Cloud, but I?m not sure I really understood the message. However, it attracted a very interesting comment from my perspective, albeit in a singly negative context, as it was in tune with my definition:

?I will comment as a true ?gray beard?. I think we should call ?Cloud Computing? something like ?IT Outsourcing 3.0?.

In the 1960?s we used to send work out to a 3rd party who would keypunch (remember 80 column punched cards), processes and return reports (remember greenbar). That was the 1960s ?Cloud?. In the 1980?s and 90?s it was typically local key entry via a terminal over a dedication comm line to a system at the 3rd party?s facility with reports sent back via the comm line to our printer. Now we see similar processing models using the web instead of dedicated comm lines. I guess this is the third generation of outsourcing, or ?IT Outsourcing 3.0?.

Sorry, I still see [it as] IT outsourcing. Been doing it for 50 years. Differences ? yeh, a bit, but the biggest thing (other than speed) has been changing the Web Cloud for the Exhaust Cloud from the vehicle taking our 1960?s data to the processor and back to us.?

As I open up the search to ?outsourcing 3.0 cloud?, I start getting many more relevant hits including one from IDC in 2011 ?As the Cloud Metamorphose into Outsourcing 3.0, CIOs and their IT Departments will face a Major Shift in their Traditional Roles, says IDC ? , CIO again in 2011 ?Beyond today?s Cloud to Outsourcing 3.0?

Reading through these hits, and many more, as expected there is no agreed definition, but the consensus appears to be that cloud is a disruption to outsourcing, and as such, part of its evolution ? whether it?s labelled ?Outsourcing 3.0? or something else.

Was I really surprised that I was not first? No,?I shall have to starting thinking about v5.0 if I want to be ahead of the pack?.
