SiriusXM fights Liberty Media takeover move ? Designer Children ...

Did Sirius XM Radio Inc. make a Faustian bargain when it decided to accept $530 million from Liberty Media Corp.to stave off bankruptcy in early 2009?

The New York-based satellite radio companyfiled a petition late Friday afternoon with theFederal Communications Commission, urging that the agency deny a request by Liberty Media Corp. that soughtto transfer several of SiriusXM?s operating licenses to Liberty?s control. Liberty owns 40% of SiriusXM and occupies fiveof its 13board seats.

Liberty?s request, filedMarch 20,include SiriusXM?searth station licensesanditsterrestrial repeaterlicense. The FCC requires SiriusXM to have all three licenses to operate.

But SiriusXM fought back, arguing in a 24-page petition that Liberty failed to get proper signatures from the companys board for its transfer request.

This is the equivalent of trying to cash an unsigned check and explaining the lack of a signature by saying nothing more than the account holder refused to sign it, SiriusXM?s attorneys wrote.

Liberty Media?s intent, and the intent ofChairman John Malone, is unclear. The company did not state a reason for seeking control of those licenses and messages to Liberty Media?s spokeswoman were not immediately returned.

At issue is whether Liberty?s 40% stake in SiriusXM allows Malone to assume ownership of the satellite radio company, which last year earned a $427-million profit on more than $3 billion in revenue.

What?s clear is that SiriusXM?s last-minute arrangement with Libertyaverted financial disaster, allowing the New York satellite radio company to make a $172-million payment on its high-interest loans justdays before it was due in February 2009. The transaction also gave Liberty Media fiveof 13 seats on the company?s board.

The deal also barred Liberty Media from trying to take over SiriusXM by acquiring 39.9% or more of SiriusXM?s stock. That provision expired March 6.

Top reasons to hire an article writer

?

Article writing services, especially those compatible to SEO are very popular these days. The process of article marketing and article submissions these days provide very low-cost and high-results website marketing opportunities over the internet. Hence, many companies are looking forward to hiring an instant article writer. What is the precise reason to hire an article writer? Is it really necessary to hire one?

Article marketing can be referred to as content marketing at its best. It is also true that the process is simple but time consuming. It is practically not possible to write about 10 -100 articles on your own to create your online presence. Additionally, if you are not a strong writer, you might require spending a lot of time in this regard.

The best thing to do here is to outsource the task to a firm.

You can even hire an article writer to get content based on your specific marketing requirements. Hiring a cheap article writer will save you good amount of money. The task is not difficult. You just need to research on the internet in order to make sure you hire the best. Look for some of the past assignments done by the writer. This will give you an idea on the kinds of assignments undertaken by the article writer and how these fit into your specific requirements.

Do not forget to mention your budget when looking for a writer. Using your favourite search engine will help you get the best plans. Just type in the requisite keywords and start searching. Ask a few questions about the experience and past assignments from the article writer prior to actually investing your hard earned money on a writer?s services.

Look specifically for seo article writer if your motive is to generate quality traffic for your website.

ICS for the Droid RAZR/MAXX and HTC Rezound coming next week, says Best Buy memo

Best Buy

We don't want anyone to get too excited and set themselves up for a heartbreak just yet, but a leaked document from Best Buy pins the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX for April 4, and the HTC Rezound on April 6. Anyone with a HTC Thunderbolt can tell you more about dates provided from Best Buy, and Motorola still hasn't given any type of ballpark date for the update for the RAZR and RAZR MAXX, which are still listed as being in the "evaluation and planning" stage. We've seen ICS leaks for both devices (the RAZR and RAZR MAXX run the same software) but nothing official from anyone involved. Both phones were to have ICS "soon" after release, but so far we're still waiting.

We want it to be true. We hope it's true. We're just naturally skeptical, especially when a third party like Best Buy is involved. We're sure nobody is trying to troll the Internets, but anyone who has worked in a corporate environment knows how things get fouled up. Here's hoping, and we'll know next week!

Mike Ragogna: Celebrating Woody Guthrie: Chatting With Arlo Guthrie & Colin Gilmore, Plus a New Multitudes Video Exclusive and More

Celebrating Woody Guthrie's Centennial

Under the invitation of Nora Guthrie, Jay Farrar, Will Johnson, Anders Parker, and Yim Yames were able to tour the Guthrie archives. Each of the four songwriters were offered the chance to mine the plethora of notebooks, scratch pads, napkins, etc., for anything that might inspire them to lend their voices and give the words new life. Presented here is a HuffPost exclusive video of the track "Careless Reckless Love," one of the results of their labor of love.

New Multitudes, released February 28, 2012, was set to coincide with the centennial celebration of Woody Guthrie's birth year. It is a 12-track release with a 23-track deluxe, limited edition variant. The latter features original Guthrie lyric sheets, an additional 12-tracks, and 11 additional compositions recorded by Farrar and Parker.

A Conversation With Arlo Guthrie

Mike Ragogna: Arlo, what are your thoughts about your father Woody Guthrie's legacy?

Arlo Guthrie: Well it's interesting because over the last fifty years, the way that we think about him has changed dramatically because of the new material that's been coming out that he wrote the lyrics for. But my dad was not a trained musician, he couldn't read or write music and so whatever tunes he had in his head for the way that these songs ought to sound went with him when he passed away in '67. He recorded about 200 songs, but there's 3,000 of them sitting there. So, my sister, Nora, has been getting these lyrics out to young musicians all over the world.

MR: And we're celebrating his centennial this year.

AG: When you start thinking about the hundred years or so that's gone by, it seems like every decade, there's a different Woody Guthrie. I think we're finally getting to the point where we're getting an image of him for the next hundred years that is very different from how they saw him in any one of the last five decades.

MR: Bruce Springsteen, the keynote speaker at SXSW, had beautiful words to say about Woody.

AG: It was a great speech, it was very good, I was impressed.

MR: Was there anything from that speech that particularly touched you?

AG: I think it was the first time that I had ever seen somebody of that stature be that candid about the songs that impressed him personally and the songs that changed his life. And to conclude it with the idea that the ones that changed his personal life meant one thing, but the ones that inspired him to want to change everybody's life, that change happened as a result of being made familiar with or hearing some of Woody Guthrie's work. That's true for a lot of young musicians, not just him, but to hear somebody of that stature say it meant a lot, personally, to me.

MR: I think for everyone in the audience, thought it was a very special moment. Now, although you are Woody's son, you have your own impressive catalog, and your own legacy as well. I still play your Amigo album to this day, and it's wonderful that "Massachusetts" has even become that state's anthem. My point is that through your music and the opening of the vaults for writers to complete or continue Woody's work, to me, it seems as a kind of cultural and musical torch is being passed along through your bloodline.

AG: I don't know if it's that. If any family believes that royalty was just not an American thing, it would be ours. We kicked out the royals of a couple of hundred years ago for good reason. My father believed that nobody is born with more rights than anybody else and more responsibilities than anybody else. That is the antithesis of the system that allows for royals to exist in the world. Some people believe that they have obligations and they have this and that, that they're born different. Nobody in America is born different and my dad believed that. So the only way that we think of ourselves is as links in a long chain that goes back long before my dad and that will continue long after us. That includes people that are not in the family, and most notably Pete Seeger, who is the one really responsible for us knowing who Woody Guthrie is. It's not so much my dad, it was guys like Pete who kept those songs going throughout the people investigating him for having ideas that were just as American as anybody else's, and for keeping the spirit alive through that generation my father couldn't live through.

MR: Speaking of Pete Seeger and Bruce Springsteen, do you see the spark of what your dad ignited in others' works, or maybe at least in certain genres like folk or singer-songwriter?

AG: Well, I think what's happened is at some point in time, back when everybody started getting electricity and we started getting record players and radios, there arose out of that the opportunity for people to sell music on a national and international scale. So we began to lose the domestic local music that music had been making for years that contained their histories and their stories and what had happened to them, their communities, and their families. Those had been passed down for countless generations and added to a collection that we don't even know who wrote them. Out of that comes this new world, where all of a sudden, the music that's being made has to be dumbed down so that it doesn't offend anybody, anywhere, at any time. That was unlike the old cowboy songs that offended everybody, unlike the old spirituals that were patently protest songs long before we gave it a name.

When we begin to have popular music, you begin to have middle ground, and it took us to change that around. It took individual people, individual companies and individual writers to try to say something that had the same kind of value, because all of a sudden, we're seeing ourselves as a nation that we didn't before. We saw ourselves as this part of the world or that part of the world. You could tell where people were from by the way they spoke, by the way they talked. All of a sudden, we started getting this "oneness" feeling, which is, in some ways, nice but in other ways, very upsetting. So in the different genres that you mentioned, there is still local music. There is still music that doesn't have to talk to everybody, it talks to a certain group of people who understand it, but it doesn't need to be dumbed down enough so that it's not offensive anymore. Those are the kinds of influences that Bruce Springsteen was talking about, that people who were unafraid, those were the ones who impressed him the most. He talked about that. He said he certainly heard the working man song in a popular group and it made him come alive. Like, "Woh, these guys are saying something."

MR: I think he was referring to The Animals' "We've Gotta Get Out Of This Place."

AG: Yeah, The Animals. And it wasn't a slap in the face to The Beatles or something like that, who may have been musically more inventive, but it was a wake-up call that said you could do that. That's happened in hip-hop, that's happened in all kinds of music that is currently going on, because we've lost interest in the national charts, nobody reads them anymore. They are totally irrelevant. That's a great thing. So we've seen it come full circle, we've seen the historic evidence of who we were as individual groups, local groups, southern groups, western groups, mountain groups, and became fairly stupid for a while, fairly innocuous, fairly uneventful. We're back to a time now, where on a larger scale, people can say something again.

MR: Arlo, what advice do you have for new artists?

AG: I don't have any advice that anybody would want to take, but if I had to distill my father's advice, it would be that it's better to fail at being yourself than to succeed at being somebody else.

A Conversation With Colin Gilmore

Mike Ragogna: Colin, what does Woody Guthrie mean to you?

Colin Gilmore: To me, Woody Gutherie was the voice that made having a conscience seem fun. I guess becoming our nation's musical folk hero just came along with the territory. No one could have opened our country's eyes like he did.

MR: What kind of a mark do you think he's left on the culture?

CG: He really set the tone for our musical heritage. If you think about our nation as having a sound track for the last 100 years, it's hard to imagine what it would be like had he not been around. Music could have been all warm fuzzy feelings, or it could have been all boring protest songs, and he made sure we understood that these two views were different limbs of the same body.

MR: Which Woody Guthrie songs do you think have the most resonance these days?

CG: "A Picture From Life's Other Side," "Jesus Christ," "Deportees," "This Land Is Your Land." These are songs about justice and the human spirit. These topics aren't going out of style any time soon.

MR: What's Colin Gilmore doing these days?

CG: Recording, writing, traveling, working, searching for inspiration. Just filmed a video for my upcoming album. Trying to play out as much as possible, make new fans and impress the old fans.

MR: So there's a new album coming soon?

CG: There is. This upcoming album will be my third, shooting to have it out later this year. Recording in Chicago and in Austin taking advantage of the digital age, but finding good old-fashioned chemistry with the people I'm recording with.

MR: Colin, what advice do you have for new artists?

CG: Always remember that the love of the music is ultimately what keeps the whole thing going. It's a hard thing to remember because there are times when it feels like promotion and hype are the whole game. If you're truly making music from the heart, you're helping to make it an industry worth saving.

A Family Affair Record Store Day Release from Guthrie Family vs. The Rondos

Sarah -- of Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion -- is part of the famous Guthrie family lineage, daughter of Arlo, granddaughter of Woody. She and Johnny have been touring and writing together for years as a couple and as part of "The Guthrie Family Rides Again." The Rondo Brothers, a production team based in San Francisco, are best known for their work with Head Automatica, Dan the Automator and remix projects for the likes of Common, Schwayze, and MC Lars, so hence the uniqueness of this folk meets beats project. Interestingly, Jim Greer -- one half of the Rondo Brothers production team -- grew up surrounded by folk music. His parents were actors on the Hootenanny variety show, so working with folk royalty, Sarah Lee & Johnny, was a dream come true. The result of this collaboration is a sound that has been coined as "beat folk."

The group is releasing a series of EP's throughout the year, mostly covers mixed with some "remixed" versions of Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion tracks. The first EP, titled, Valentine (released coincidentally on Valentine's Day) consists of two covers: The Jules Shear-penned "All Through the Night" made famous by Cyndi Lauper and Liz Phair's "Never Said," along with a remixed version of "Looking for You," an outtake from Sarah Lee & Johnny's early 2011 release Bright Examples.

The next EP is going to be a Record Store Day split 7inch that will have their version of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" and Jim Croce's "Spin Spin Spin."

How quantum physics could make 'The Matrix' more efficient

How quantum physics could make 'The Matrix' more efficient [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 29-Mar-2012

Centre for Quantum Technologies at the National University of Singapore

Researchers have discovered a new way in which computers based on quantum physics could beat the performance of classical computers. The work, by researchers based in Singapore and the UK, implies that a Matrix-like simulation of reality would require less memory on a quantum computer than on a classical computer. It also hints at a way to investigate whether a deeper theory lies beneath quantum theory. The finding is published 27 March in Nature Communications.

The finding emerges from fundamental consideration of how much information is needed to predict the future. Mile Gu, Elisabeth Rieper and Vlatko Vedral at the Centre for Quantum Technologies at the National Univesity of Singapore, with Karoline Wiesner from the University of Bristol, UK, considered the simulation of "stochastic" processes, where there are several possible outcomes to a given procedure, each occurring with a calculable probability. Many phenomena, from stock market movements to the diffusion of gases, can be modelled as stochastic processes.

The details of how to simulate such processes have long occupied researchers. The minimum amount of information required to simulate a given stochastic process is a significant topic of study in the field of complexity theory, where it is known in scientific literature as statistical complexity.

Researchers know how to calculate the amount of information transferred inherently in any stochastic process. Theoretically, this sets the lowest amount of information needed to simulate the process. In reality, however, classical simulations of stochastic processes require more storage than this.

Gu, Wiesner, Rieper and Vedral, who is also affiliated with the University of Oxford, UK, showed that quantum simulators need to store less information than the optimal classical simulators. That is because quantum simulations can encode information about the probabilities in a "superposition", where one quantum bit of information can represent more than one classical bit.

What surprised the researchers is that the quantum simulations are still not as efficient as they could be: they still have to store more information than the process would seem to need.

That suggests quantum theory might not yet be optimized. "What's fascinating to us is that there is still a gap. It makes you think, maybe here's a way of thinking about a theory beyond quantum physics," says Vedral.

How quantum physics could make 'The Matrix' more efficient [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 29-Mar-2012

HBT: Darvish to make debut on April 9

As noted by Richard Durrett of ESPN Dallas, right-hander Yu Darvish is scheduled to make his first MLB start on April 9 at home against the Mariners.

The Rangers revealed their season-opening rotation on Thursday, pegging Colby Lewis for Opening Day (April 6) against the White Sox. He will be followed by Derek Holland and Matt Harrison in that three-game series vs. Chicago before Darvish kicks things off against Seattle. Neftali Feliz will go fifth.

Darvish agreed to a six-year, $60 million contract in January after the Rangers paid a?$51,703,411 posting fee to the Nippon Ham Fighters for his exclusive negotiating rights. The 6-foot-5 hurler posted a 1.44 ERA and 276/36 K/BB ratio in 232 innings last season in Japan. He has a 3.00 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 10/7 K/BB ratio in nine Cactus League innings this spring.

VerticalResponse Email Marketing Blog for Small Business: Cut the ...

IStock_000016422246XSmallFor any small business it's important to spend money where it?counts and eliminate unnecessary expenses. Besides looking at what cost drivers you can keep down, it's also important to remember the age-old saying, time is money. Often, finding ways to save time in your day to day operations is the quickest way to eliminating overhead. Looking at both unnecessary expenses and time-wasting endeavors, we've compiled a list of eight ways to save money and focus on growing your business.

1. Communicate Efficiently - We often waste time throughout the day on unnecessary meetings, long email chains or instant messenger conversations. 55% of communication is visual so determine the best mode of communication for a particular scenario in order to save time. Sometimes it's more appropriate to call or have a face-to-face conversation. Instant messaging is perfect for sharing links and asking quick questions, ?but when it comes to in-depth discussions or complicated explanations, sometimes it's best to pick up the phone or just walk over.

2. Meet When Necessary - Meetings are another mode of communication that tends to take more time/resources than necessary. Eliminate meetings that aren't vital and only include individuals whose input is essential. If you're finding yourself unable to get your work done throughout the day because of meetings consider instead a quick team huddle, an informational email with an attached report or a lunch or coffee walk (you gotta eat right?).

3. Go Green - Not only is it good for the environment but it can also save you supply and waste pick-up costs. Replace paper and plastic plates, cups and utensils with reusable ones. Save money on paper and printing by going paperless. Ditch the paper by sending email, signing contracts electronically, storing documents online, and taking notes on a white board or on your computer.

4. Reward Employees - Yes, we're telling you to spend more money on your employees. Happy employees stick around and work harder. Companies that have high turnover spend more money searching for, hiring, and training replacements. Give incentives for sticking around. These can be financial, of course, but something as simple as providing Monday bagels, lunch once a week or stocking the fridge with juice and soda can also improve morale around the office and boost loyalty. Investing in professional development is another way to keep employees and grow them as an asset.?Take a look at our post, 7 Tips for Recognizing Your Peeps, for more ideas.?

5. Negotiate - Sometimes saving money for your business is as simple as asking for a discount or asking to negotiate your rates. Talk to vendors and suppliers to let them know you're interested in being a long-term client. More often than not they'll adjust in the interest of developing a lasting relationship.

6. Hire Smart - Hire employees with multiple skills and strengths. Sometimes one mind is greater than two (and it'll cost your business less too). A few well-rounded employees can eliminate the need to hire many one-dimensional individuals who are only qualified to do specific tasks.

7. Look Around - Evaluate your needs. Do you need a larger or smaller office space? Do you need office space at all? Would it be more efficient to work from home? Evaluate your workspace and determine whether or not it fits your needs. Don't pay for more or even less than you need. Depending on the size and type of business you run, finding the right space to get the job done can make a huge impact on productivity.

8. Don't Do It Yourself - Did I mention time is money? You wouldn't spend hours, days, or months trying to re-roof your house or remodel your bathroom if you didn't have the skills to do so. It probably wouldn't turn out well and you most likely?wouldn't see the results you imagined. The same concept applies to your business. Don't spend hours trying to do your taxes or attempting to re-design your website. Sometimes it pays to hire an expert to do the job quicker and better than you can.

Every business has overhead they can't do without. Hopefully these tips will help eliminate or decrease extra spending and leave you with higher profit margins so you can put more money towards revenue generating activities.

Want more tips? Ask around. Colleagues, employees and friends often have great ideas on ways to cut costs. And, let us know what you learn!

Is There a Doctor in the House? | Empty Nest Parenting: Grown and ...

Of all the topics I could go on about to a psychiatrist, real estate has never been on my top ten list of neurosis. However, now that I stand at the brink of a major domicile decision, I want to cry out ?Is there a doctor in the house? I need to talk about my home!?

The precipice in question is the decision of what to do with our house, the one we bought three months before we had our first child, the one my husband built a picket fence around to keep children in and evil out, the one in which we have grieved and celebrated, together, for more than two decades. Previously overflowing with family energy, it will soon become very quiet once our youngest leaves for college; that day will arrive sooner than I could have possibly imagined when we moved in.

I might babble to the dear doctor about my happy childhood and tell of the sweet nostalgia that fills me up whenever I visit my out -of -state mother, two or three times a year. Witnessing her joy when she has her complete family in residence defines maternal love to me.

But I wonder, is it our duty to our kids to keep our house exactly as it is for them to return home to, and, someday, to bring their future spouses and children? Just like our parents did?

My widowed mother loves her home of forty-five years, especially when it is filled with her children and grandchildren. But as our time together ends, I wave goodbye to an eighty-five year old woman whose house fits her a bit like an overcoat a size too big. My heart breaks and a have a knot in my throat as we drive away. Back home, I fret about her wellbeing but understand that she has no plans to live anywhere else unless and until her health forces that decision.

My mother-in-law felt the same way throughout her ninety-one years, the last ten of which she also spent alone.

I have loved making our house-into-a?home, along with my husband, and I will be the first one to reach for the Kleenex on the day we move out. What I want, though, is to have a chance to create a second family home, also with my husband, while we are still ?young? (don?t laugh, kids) enough to manage the transition.

So as I wind down my chat with my imaginary therapist, I know I am dealing with guilt, and I appreciate this session.

?Doc, but if we promise to create space for our progeny and to, somehow, embrace all future additions to the family, do you think they will forgive us for wanting to move to a house that works best for a two rather than a four? If not, are you taking new patients??

What is a Roth IRA and How Does it Work?

This post is part of the #RothIRAMovement, designed to bring more awareness to the benefits of the Roth Individual Retirement Account or Arrangement (IRA). All credit goes to Jeff from GoodFinancialCents.com for starting the Roth IRA Movement and getting over 100 bloggers involved in this project.

What Is a Roth IRA and How Does it Work

Do you know about the Roth IRA?

Saving for your retirement is important.

You need to have money saved by the time you retire so that you can afford your expenses when you are physically and mentally unable to work.

When people talk retirement, the Roth IRA often comes up.

Rightfully so.

It?s an excellent tool to help you save more money for your retirement. I?ve used it in the past, in addition to my company?s 401K, to help me save for my own retirement needs.

Here are some characteristics of people who have a Roth IRA:

  • They may be just getting started with retirement investing and looking for a place to put their savings.
  • They may use a company 401K, but they are looking for an additional place to save.
  • They want to save a lot of money on taxes when they withdraw their retirement savings.
  • They want to have more control over their investment options and the investing fees they pay.
  • They want more control over their retirement savings withdrawals (i.e. use the money for a first home, major medical emergency, etc.).

Sound good? If you?re wondering what a Roth IRA is and how it works, I?m going to try to answer that for you in plain English below.

First Came the Traditional IRA

To understand the Roth IRA, it?s important to understand it?s predecessor, the Traditional IRA. The Traditional IRA and the Roth IRA are both tax-advantaged places to hold your retirement investments. Meaning, there is some type of tax savings involved. The U.S. Government created them so that you?d be encouraged to save more for your own retirement.

With a Traditional IRA, you place pre-tax dollars into the account and you don?t have to pay taxes on the contributions or earning until you start withdrawing the money at 59 and 1/2. In short, with a Traditional IRA, you get a tax break now, but you have to pay taxes on the earnings from the account when you retire and start cashing out.

This is almost identical to the way a 401K works. The major difference is control. With a 401K you are at the mercy of your employer?s choice of funds and expenses. With a Traditional IRA (as well as the Roth), you get to decide where to open the account, what to put in it, and if you want investments with low costs.

The Roth IRA Flipped Retirement Savings On Its Head

The Roth IRA is taxed just the opposite of the Traditional IRA and 401K. You place after-tax dollars into the account, and you don?t pay taxes on the contributions or earnings EVER, as long as the money is taken out in what is called a qualified withdrawal.

Because this account is so great, the government decided to put limits on it: both the amount of contributions that can be made each year and the amount of income a person can make and still contribute. In short, you can?t put an endless amount of money into the account and rich people need not participate. Be sure to review the contribution and income limits in more detail before starting up a Roth IRA.

It?s important to stress the concept that IRAs are simply places to hold your investments. They are not investments in and of themselves. You have to put something in them. Most people put some combination of stocks, bonds, and cash in their IRAs.

One last note about the Roth IRA: you have to go out and open one up for yourself. Your employer won?t do this for you. But this isn?t a negative. It?s a positive feature. Because you have complete control, you can decide where to open your Roth IRA, what to invest in, and you?ll never lose the ability to contribute if and when you change jobs.

Steps to Making the Roth IRA Work for You

So now that you have the basic concepts down, let?s look at the steps to making a Roth IRA work for you.

  1. Decide if you want to invest for retirement using a Roth IRA. In can be used in addition to, or in place of, a company 401K.
  2. Determine if you are eligible for the Roth IRA based on the income limitations.
  3. Open up a Roth IRA with a mutual fund company or discount broker.
  4. Decide what investments you want in your Roth IRA.
  5. Start making after-tax contributions to those investments within your Roth IRA.
  6. Continue making contributions as long as you want and are eligible.
  7. When you?re ready, start withdrawing funds tax-free.

Hopefully this post gave you a good idea of what the Roth IRA is and how it works. At the risk of repeating myself, it?s really a great tool to help you save much more for your retirement than you normally would. Taxes can really eat into your investment earnings. If you can take taxes out of the equation then you?ll be able to keep a lot more of your hard earned money.

If you?re looking for a good video explanation of the Roth IRA, look no further than this gem from Kevin @ Thousandaire.com:

How to Use the Google AdWords Shared Library

In recent weeks we?ve been creating a series of guides to various components of the Google AdWords interface to help advertisers understand all of the features and functionality available to them within AdWords. This is the first installment in our series on how to make the most of the Google AdWords left navigation, and we?ll be focusing on the AdWords Shared Library.

What Lives in the Shared Library, and What Purpose Does it Serve?

?Within the AdWords Shared Library are three core elements:

  • Audiences ? These are specific segmentations based on interest and the way people have interacted with your site (for more information on audiences check out our AdWords audience tab guide) that you can leverage within your display campaigns.
  • Campaign Negative Keywords ? These are negative keyword lists that you can leverage across your campaigns.
  • Campaign Placement Exclusions ? These are excluded or negative placement lists that you can leverage across your campaigns.

As you can see, the overall theme with these options is that you?re able to leverage the same component (audiences, negative keywords, and placement exclusions) in multiple areas of your account:

AdWords Shared Library

Let?s look at each of the specific options and how you can make use of them within your campaigns.

Shared AdWords Audiences

This represents the master list of your AdWords audiences ? you can create AdWords audiences that target specific topic areas, remarketing audiences (based on whether people have come to your site and how they?ve interacted with it), or a combination of the two. From there you can reference all of those audiences within the shared audiences library, or you can create a new audience from here as well.

This is a very helpful section for identifying the different audiences that are available in an account, and if you?re working on an account that you?re not familiar with you can access the code for the account?s retargeting campaigns to ensure that the proper code is installed on the proper pages.

Campaign Negative Keyword Lists

These are a great starting point and tool for most campaigns because they make setting a number of common negatives across a large number of ad groups very quick and easy. For most accounts you?ll have a lot of common negative keywords you want to exclude across your campaigns ? some good examples might be ?jobs? if you don?t have a job board on your subject, or ?news? if you?re a product company and don?t want to drive traffic for people looking for news content, or you might want to create a branded negative keyword list or use negative keyword lists to better direct PPC traffic to the appropriate ad group.? Whatever you include in it, once you?ve created a list, you can then very quickly apply it to any of your search campaigns:

Campaign Placement Exclusions

Similarly, when you?ve pulled a placement report and found thousands in wasted spend, you may often want to set those poor performing placements as negatives throughout your campaign. You simply create a list of placements you want to exclude:

Campaign Placement Exclusions

And you can then push the exclusions to various campaigns in the same way you would with shared negative keyword lists.

Why Is All This Valuable?

The main utility of the shared library is in saving you time, particularly as your campaigns grow. As more and more advertisers use the program and Google continues to try to balance power (for the bigger AdWords spenders) with ease of use for small businesses, AdWords is becoming a pretty complex, bloated product, so it?s necessary for them to layer on tools like shared libraries to help advertisers make changes across multiple campaigns, and being aware of where these features live and how to make use of them can mean significant time savings as you try to manage your AdWords campaigns.

Photos of asteroid Vesta reveal bright, ancient rock and dark, melted stone

The new photos of Vesta from NASA's Dawn spacecraft highlight odd, shiny spots that are nearly twice as bright as other parts of the asteroid ? suggesting it is original material left over from the space rock's birth 4 billion years ago, NASA officials said today.

A NASA spacecraft orbiting the huge asteroid Vesta has snapped amazing new photos of the colossal space rock, images that reveal strange features never-before-seen on an asteroid, scientists say.

The?new photos of Vesta?from NASA's Dawn spacecraft highlight odd, shiny spots that are nearly twice as bright as other parts of the asteroid ? suggesting it is original material left over from the space rock's birth 4 billion years ago, NASA officials said today (March 21).

With a width of about 330 miles (530 km),?asteroid Vesta?is one of the largest and brightest objects in the main asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. NASA's Dawn probe has been orbiting Vesta since 2011 to study the space rock in unprecedented detail.

"Our analysis finds this bright material originates from Vesta and has undergone little change since the formation of Vesta over 4 billion years ago," said Jian-Yang Li, a Dawn participating scientist at the University of Maryland, College Park, in a statement. "We're eager to learn more about what minerals make up this material and how the present Vesta surface came to be."

Asteroid Vesta unveiled

Li and his colleagues unveiled Dawn's new views of Vesta today at the 43rd Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in The Woodlands, Texas.

The photos show surprisingly bright spots all over Vesta, with the most predominant ones located inside or around the asteroid's many craters. The bright areas range from large spots (around several hundred feet across) to simply huge, with some stretching across 10 miles (16 kilometers) of terrain. [Video: Vesta ? Asteroid or Dwarf Planet?]

"Dawn's ambitious exploration of Vesta has been going beautifully," said Marc Rayman, Dawn chief engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., which oversees the mission. "As we continue to gather a bounty of data, it is thrilling to reveal fascinating alien landscapes."?

Dawn mission scientists suspect the bright patches on Vesta were exposed during violent collisions with other space rocks. These impacts may have spread the bright material across the asteroid and mixed it together with darker material onVesta's surface, researchers said.

Astronomers have known about variations in Vesta's brightness for some time. Photos taken by the Hubble Space Telescope before Dawn arrived at the asteroid also revealed the bright patches.

Never-before seen asteroid melt

But only the close-up photos from the Dawn probe have revealed the surprising variety of dark blotches on Vesta, which appear as dark gray, brown or reddish blemishes, NASA officials said.

In some views, these darker spots are small deposits near impact craters, while in other photos they appear in larger concentrations. These darker spots on Vesta may also be the result of collisions on the?asteroid, researchers said.

Slow carbon-rich asteroids may have created some of the smaller dark material deposits without carving out a big crater. Meanwhile, faster objects may have potentially slammed into Vesta so hard they melted the big asteroid's crust, which could have also created the dark spots.

"Some of these past collisions were so intense they melted the surface," said Brett Denevi, a Dawn participating scientist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Md. "Dawn's ability to image the melt marks a unique find. Melting events like these were suspected, but never before seen on an asteroid."

NASA launched the $466 million?Dawn spacecraft?in 2007 and Vesta is only the first stop of the spacecraft's two-asteroid tour. Dawn arrived at Vesta in July 2011 and is expected to spend about a year there before heading off to its next target ? the even larger asteroid Ceres, which is also classified as a dwarf planet.

Dawn is expected to arrive at Ceres in February 2015.
