The NHL lockout has forced most hockey writers to cover boardroom negotiations and players' prospects overseas instead of actual games, but Pat Hickey of The Montreal Gazette has found something a little different to write about. As noted by Bloomberg Businessweek, Hickey has been covering a virtual season for the Montreal Canadiens just as he would the real one, with EA's NHL 13 providing simulated games in the absence of any actual action on the ice. Coincidentally, the Habs are currently tied for first in the league. As Hickey tells Bloomberg, covering a virtual season comes with some benefits -- the games only take about an hour each and he's able to make up quotes -- and it's also proven to be surprisingly popular. Gunmen kidnap police recruits in northern Iraq: officers

ANBAR, Iraq (Reuters) - Masked gunmen hijacked a bus carrying 20 police recruits in northern Iraq on Friday and took them to a remote area bordering Syria where al-Qaeda operates, police sources said.

The kidnappers, armed with machineguns and rocket propelled grenades, seized the vehicle on the road from Mosul to the capital Baghdad and took the recruits to Anbar province, said officers.

"There were 20 volunteers coming from Mosul on their way to Baghdad. They stopped in a restaurant to get lunch in Baiji and when they left, gunmen kidnapped them," said a senior police officer from the area who declined to be named.

Anbar was almost entirely controlled by al Qaeda during the height of Iraq's insurgency from 2005-07, until most of the militants were pushed out by local tribesmen and U.S. forces.

The group has kept hold of pockets of land in the rugged region, using its caves and valleys as hideouts. The Sunni Islamist organization often targets police, seeking to undermine Iraq's Shi'ite-led government.

Iraqi officials are worried militants may be gaining weapons and support from the conflict in neighboring Syria, where Islamists have joined the ranks of rebels fighting to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad.

"All our checkpoints at the entrance to Anbar are on high alert to look for the (hijacked) bus," said a police source.

Almost a year since the last U.S. troops left, security is still a major challenge for Iraq. Although violence is far lower than it was several years ago, nearly 2,000 people have been killed already this year.

In March, gunmen disguised as police raided checkpoints and homes in Haditha and killed at least 27 members of the security forces. Al-Qaeda later claimed responsibility for the attack.

Study: Husbands who are close to in-laws are in it for the long haul

Family gatherings around the holidays usually mean one thing: it?s time to see the in-laws. And according to new findings, how your spouse gets along with your parents could have implications for your marriage.

Recently-released research by Dr. Terri Orbuch, psychologist and researcher at University of Michigan, shows that marriages last longer when the husband reports that he has a close relationship with his wife?s parents. The risk of divorce dropped nearly 20 percent.

The findings are part of a 26-year longitudinal study which followed 373 couples who applied for their marriage licenses in 1986. Dr. Orbuch continued to follow the 746 people over the years either as together as couples or separately as divorced individuals.

Psychologist Dr. Christine Fernandez says men who get along well with their wife?s family may be signalling that they are making extra efforts to make the relationship work. She believes that the little extra effort goes a long way, especially during the first years of marriage.

?Couples are coming together and trying to build a family. But both are used to how things were done in their family of origin,? Dr. Fernandez says. ?When she sees that husbands are making the effort to get along, she feels more loved because he?s trying to understand her more fully.?

But the in-law and spouse relationship is not the same for women. According to Dr. Orbuch the findings were reversed by gender. When wives reported being very close to their in-laws, especially early in marriage, the couple?s likelihood of getting divorced increased by 20 percent.

Dr. Orbuch attributes this finding to the different ways men and women approach their in-laws.

?As women I think we have a much more difficult time setting boundaries and limits,? she says. ?When we feel really close to our in-laws we?re unable to make those clear set boundaries and interpret any comments as meddling.?

Men, on the other hand, may have an easier time brushing off the same comments that their wives consider as intervening.

For Dr. Fernandez, the boundary setting problem can continue one step further. She says that in her work as a psychologist, she?s seen problems with the in-laws be symptomatic of issues within the relationship itself.

?I would go further to say that if the wife has trouble setting boundaries with the in-laws, she probably has problems setting boundaries with her husband as well,? Dr. Fernandez says. ?If she believes she?s not getting support, that?s another problem within the relationship as well. So it?s not about the in-laws causing the issues.?

The findings on the in-law and spouse relationship are early releases from the full study, which will be published in the journal?Family Relations?in 2013.

How Facebook Tagged Me as a Copyright Violator

I am a copyright violator, and Facebook knows it. At least, I was up until early this morning, when Facebook took action to enforce the copyright on the cover photo I had uploaded the day before.

As a fan of the UK show Doctor Who, I was excited to see BBC America release a couple of preview photos from the program's Christmas special, including a compelling picture of a couple of scary-looking snowmen -- very Nightmare Before Christmas stuff. As with other notable pop culture events, I wanted to share my excitement on Facebook.

The thing that provoked the strongest reaction was the photo itself, and it happened to be the perfect dimensions as my cover photo, I chose to use it there. What better way to share my enthusiasm for the show, and maybe convince a few Facebook users to check it out?

The photo stayed put for the rest of the day I uploaded it. But when I woke up the next morning, it was gone.

I looked in the album of my cover photos. It was still there. I began to upload another photo and saw this message:

Pick a unique photo from your life to feature at the top of your timeline. Note: This space is not meant for banner ads or other promotions. Please don't use content that is commercial, promotional, copyright-infringing or already in use on other people's covers.

That message is the boilerplate that you see whenever your cover pic is empty. I don't believe I saw this when Facebook first introduced Timeline. Indeed, Facebook's Help page on cover photos doesn't mention copyright at all.

It's unlikely the BBC would take issue with the fact that I wanted to express my excitement about one of their shows to all my friends and followers. After all, this was a press photo -- one that the channel distributes for the express purpose of getting in front of as many potential viewers as possible.

I also manage a Facebook Page, the one for Mashable Tech. When the Page has no cover photo, and you try to add one, you see a slightly different message:

Pick a unique photo to feature at the top of your Page timeline. Note: This space is not meant for promotions, coupons, or advertisements. Your cover photo should not be primarily text-based or infringe on anyone else's copyright. Learn More about choosing a cover photo.

The difference in wording is subtle, but important. For any brand Page, it's hard to imagine the a cover photo that isn't at least a little bit "commercial" or "promotional." But brands are given some leeway -- a good thing for Mashable's Tech page since we often upload photos of gadgets we recommend.

Individuals, apparently, aren't granted such latitude.

I'm not taking serious issue with what Facebook is trying to do here, just the way in which they did it. Though the notion of a copyright violation in this case is ridiculous, I appreciate the spirit of what the policy upholds. If everyone were allowed to upload album covers or movie posters, Facebook cover photos (which are public and visible by anyone, whether they're on Facebook or not) would become a massive, tacky catalog of pop culture, the digital equivalent of the Las Vegas Strip. Or worse, MySpace.

Still, I never got so much as a note from Facebook about what they did. The only clue as to what happened came after the fact. The company also took the unusual liberty of deleting the caption I wrote for the pic. Clearly, the process has room for improvement.

Employee requests new intermittent leave plan? - Business ...

Employees with serious medical conditions that require occasional time off are entitled to intermittent FMLA leave. If you grant leave and the employee makes a new request that wasn?t specified in the original medical certification, you can insist on a new certification.

Recent case: Clayton was an in??structor at Wilberforce University, and also worked a second part-time campus job on Friday afternoons. An allergy sufferer, he had an intermittent leave certification that allowed him to take regular time off to have vaccinations during allergy season.

For five years, all went well. Then the university adopted a new instructional schedule that interfered with Clayton?s Friday job. He then requested a flexible schedule that included Friday hours off, ostensibly as intermittent leave. That?s when the university insisted on a new inter??mittent FMLA leave certification.

Clayton sued, alleging that the request was interference with his right to FMLA leave.

The court disagreed. It reasoned that because Clayton asked for a different schedule?something he had never requested before?the school was entitled to a new certification. The court agreed and dismissed the claim. (Grigsby v. Wilberforce Uni??ver??sity, No. 3:10-CV-184, SD OH, 2012)

Final note: Check with your attorney before requesting recertification of intermittent leave, especially if the original certification cited a specific time period. Some legitimate reasons for a change: expiration of the time specified in the original certification, a change in the employee?s medical condition?or your suspicion that leave is being abused.

Day of reckoning for Cameron and British press

LONDON (Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron faces a no-win dilemma on Thursday when a far-reaching inquiry into British newspapers delivers its verdict on how to curb the excesses of the country's notoriously aggressive press.

Cameron, who was embarrassed when details of his personal links to Rupert Murdoch and his media empire emerged at the inquiry, will have to decide whether to accept its findings, which risk dividing his coalition government and angering an already hostile press.

He will give his response to the Commons after the report is published at 1330 GMT, under scrutiny from the chamber's public gallery filled with high-profile figures who have campaigned for a clampdown on an industry they say ruins lives.

The inquiry was ordered by Cameron following public outrage at Murdoch's now defunct News of the World tabloid, whose journalists had hacked the phone messages of schoolgirl Milly Dowler, who was later found dead.

Exposing the cosy relationships between political leaders, police chiefs and press barons, the inquiry revealed the "dark arts" of journalists seeking ever more salacious stories in a bid to hold up dwindling circulation figures.

Huge attention will be focused on whether Lord Justice Brian Leveson, one of Britain's top judges, recommends a new body to regulate the press with powers enshrined in law, or merely says the existing system of self-regulation should be overhauled.

He could also criticise Cameron's government, including one of his most senior ministers, Jeremy Hunt, for close ties to Murdoch's News Corp and their handling of the company's aborted bid to take control of pay-TV group BSkyB in what would have been its largest acquisition.

The press, backed by some 80 members of parliament, has lobbied hard for Cameron to resist calls for legislation, arguing it would curb freedom of speech and mean newspapers requiring state approval for the first time since 1695.

However, a similar number of MPs, as well as academics and celebrities, favour statutory regulation while opinion polls suggest the public also agrees.

The issue has divided the cabinet and could put the prime minister at odds with the leader of the Lib Dems, the junior partners in the coalition government.

"The status quo is unacceptable and needs to change," Cameron told parliament on Wednesday. "This government set up Leveson because of unacceptable practices in parts of the media and because of a failed regulatory system."

Some media have speculated that Cameron will give the press one last chance to get its house in order even if Leveson backs a new law, although critics say there have been similar repeated warnings for half a century, all of which have been ignored.

Under the watchful eye of Leveson, celebrities - including Hollywood actor Hugh Grant, Harry Potter author JK Rowling, singer Charlotte Church, Dowler's parents and other unknown Britons who found themselves in the media spotlight, told the inquiry how they had been harassed, bullied, and traumatised by the press.

Four prime ministers including Cameron were also quizzed in great detail about their links to newspaper owners, especially Murdoch, who himself endured two days of grilling, during which he denied playing puppet-master to those running the country.

The inquiry heard intimate emails and text messages between Cameron and Murdoch's top lieutenant Rebekah Brooks, who goes on trial next year over the alleged phone hacking.

"A lot of these very difficult decisions are no-win situations politically but what the prime minister wants to do is to do the right thing, and that's the kind of decision that will stand the test of time," Hunt, a former Culture Secretary and now Health Secretary, told Sky News.

Turkey lifts headscarf ban in religious schools

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkey has lifted a ban on female students wearing headscarves in schools providing religious education, in a move drawing criticism from secularists who see it as fresh evidence of the government pushing an Islamic agenda.

Education has been one of the main battlegrounds between religious conservatives, who form the bedrock of support for Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's AK Party, and secular opponents who accuse him of imposing Islamic values by stealth.

Those secularist fears were fuelled this year when Erdogan said his goal was to raise a "religious youth" and the AK Party, in power for the past decade, pushed through a reform of the education system which boosted the role of religious schools.

Under the latest regulation, announced on Tuesday and going into effect from the 2013-2014 academic year, pupils at regular schools will also be able to wear headscarves in Koran lessons.

Erdogan said the reform, which also ends a requirement for pupils to wear uniform, was taken in response to public demand.

"Let's allow everyone to dress their child as they wish, according to their means," he said at a news conference in Madrid on Tuesday.

"These are all steps taken as a result of a demand."

Rivalry between religious and secular elites is one of the major fault lines in Turkish public life.

Erdogan's Islamist-rooted AK Party has tamed the influence of the military - the self-appointed guardians of secularism since the modern republic was founded in 1923 - over the past decade, but he denies an Islamist agenda.

Last month the military top brass attended a reception in the presidential palace alongside the headscarved wives of the president and prime minister, something that until recently would have been unthinkable.

The secularist newspaper Cumhuriyet said the latest reform was a step towards the Islamization of education.

"This will end with chadors," a headline in the paper said.

The latest reform followed a law approved in March allowing "imam hatip" schools specializing in religious education combined with a modern curriculum to take children from the age of 11 instead of 15.

The Egitim-Sen education sector union was critical of the move on school uniforms and the headscarf.

"The changes in the clothing regulations are important in enabling us to see the intense degree to which the education system is being made religious," the union said in a statement.

"Religious symbols which spread a religious lifestyle in schools and which will have a negative impact on the psychology of developing children should definitely not be used," it said.

But others voiced support for the reform.

Gurkan Avc?, head of the Democratic Educators' Union (DES), said it had removed a legacy of the September 12, 1980 military coup by changing the dress code.

"We will not be able to rescue the education system from the perverse consequences of the oppression, rituals, dogma and thinking of the 'cold war' period until teachers and pupils are liberated," he said.

High-dose opioid treatment associated with mental health and medical comorbidities

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? Most patients taking opioids for low back pain or other pain syndromes are prescribed low-to moderate doses, but a substantial number are given higher doses. Although there is no consensus on an absolute limit because tolerance varies over time among individual patients, what is known, however, is higher does are associated with elevated risks for side effects, addiction, overdoses and death. A study published by Oregon Health and Sciences University in The Journal of Pain showed that patients on higher doses of opioids had higher rates of psychiatric problems, co-prescriptions of sedatives and health care services utilization.

The Journal of Pain is the per-review publication of the American Pain Society.

For the study, the research team sought to examine correlates of higher dose opioid use among patients in primary care settings being treated for low back pain. The goals were to determine the prevalence of higher dose opioid prescribing, identify the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients receiving higher doses, and examine health services utilization patterns among high-dose users.

Electronic pharmacy and medical records were examined for 26,000 adults 18 and older diagnosed with low back pain, of which 61 percent received an opioid prescription. Among patients receiving long-term opioid treatment, nearly 9 percent received a higher dose in their final prescription. Patients receiving higher doses of opioid therapy were prescribed a median daily dose of 180 mg per day, which was seven times greater that patients receiving lower doses.

The analysis showed that chronic pain patients with comorbid psychiatric diagnoses are more likely to be prescribed opioids compared with patients without psychiatric problems. The authors found that the prevalence of mental health diagnoses increases with longer duration of opioid use. Studies have indicated a relationship between depression and persistent pain and that each could have a causative influence on the other. Thus, depression may lead to more opioid use and opioid use may cause or exacerbate depression.

The authors concluded their results should prompt physicians to screen opioid therapy candidates for mental health and substance use disorders.

Another finding reported in the study showed that patients in the higher dose group were frequent consumers of medical services, including visits to emergency departments. Also, higher dose patients had the largest number of different prescribers, which could indicate continued uncontrolled pain, continuity of care problems or "doctor shopping."

Top court rejects appeal of ex-Louisiana congressman

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Supreme Court on Monday refused to hear the appeal of former Louisiana congressman William Jefferson, who had challenged his 2009 conviction on multiple charges of bribery and money laundering.

Jefferson's case had gained notoriety after FBI agents found $90,000 wrapped in foil and stored in a freezer at the home of the former Democratic lawmaker.

Prosecutors accused Jefferson of soliciting millions of dollars in bribes from companies while using his office to broker ventures such as telecommunications transactions in Ghana and Nigeria, oil concessions in Equatorial Guinea, investments in a Nigerian sugar plant and satellite transmission contracts in Botswana, Equatorial Guinea and Democratic Republic of Congo.

A federal jury found Jefferson guilty of soliciting bribes, money laundering and participation in a racketeering scheme. In March, the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Virginia, had upheld 10 of 11 guilty counts. Jefferson, now 65, is serving a 13-year prison term.

In his appeal to the Supreme Court, Jefferson said the 4th Circuit should not have upheld his conviction premised on his being influenced in how he performed "official acts," saying that such acts should be confined to "the formal legislative process" or at most to "governmental decision-making."

The U.S. government opposed Jefferson's appeal, calling it a "cramped" interpretation of the relevant bribery law.

Garber says talks for NYC stadium at 'finish line'

NEW YORK (AP) - Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber says the league is at "the finish line" in negotiations with New York City to acquire land to build a stadium in Queens that would become home for the league's 20th team.

Garber says after that deal is agreed to, there would have to be negotiations with the city and state as part of the approval process to build on the 10-acre site in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. The parkland used for the stadium would have to be replaced, and a deal would have to be reached with the New York Mets to use their parking lots adjacent to Citi Field.

Garber says the new team could start play for the 2016 season. He also says the New York market is the only one David Beckham doesn't have the right to buy into and the New York Red Bulls, who play in Harrison, N.J., don't have the right to block a second team in the New York area.

GraphicConverter

The Mac has always been the platform that high-end professionals prefer for working with graphics, video, and music. But the Mac also excels in low-end graphics software for users like me who want to convert bitmap graphics from one format to another, or reduce the size of a graphic before mailing it or posting it online, or who want to make amateur-level touchups or even, when we're feeling ambitious, creating our own custom icons for folders or files. For all these purposes, and a few hundred more, the standout app is GraphicConverter. One reason this app stands out from the competition is that it's been in continuous development since 1992, and the author has had time to add every feature you can imagine and a few dozen that you've never thought of.

What it Does
As its name suggests, the heart of GraphicConverter is its ability to open files in two hundred graphics formats and export to almost eighty different formats. For many legacy formats, GraphicConverter seems to be only conversion program that can handle the format under OS X. As in most graphic-manipulation programs, you can open a file in GraphicConverter, modify it with a variety of tools and filters, resize it, add text, and save it in the same or a different format. But GraphicConverter also builds in a powerful batch-processor feature. You can select a folder full of graphic files in multiple formats, and set up a series of operations that the app will perform on every file, such as converting to a single format, adding text to the exported filename, applying a maximum size, changing the gamma, adding an alpha channel, or dozens of others. Of course you can save and reuse any series of operations that you create.

All these functions are offered in a modern, easy-to-manage interface that feels at home in OS X. For example, when building a series of batch operations like the ones described in the preceding paragraph, you drag individual functions from a list of available functions into a stack of specific functions that you want to perform, each with a menu of options. This is basically the same interface that OS X uses for the system-wide batch operations you can create with its built-in Automator app.

GraphicConverter includes a catalog -building feature that creates thumbnail catalogs in the form of HTML pages with links to the full-size files, or as printed pages or static images that contain thumbnails but no links. Picasa and similar services can build HTML catalogs that are far more elegant than GraphicConverter's default layout, so I use those services when I post picture galleries online, but I use GraphicConverter to provide HTML catalogues of all the images in a folder and all its subfolders that I can use on my own disk, so that I don't need to navigate through multiple folders in the Finder to get to the image I need.

What it Doesn't Do
Professional graphics designers won't be satisfied with the image-editing tools in GraphicConverter, though they're almost perfect for amateurs like me. GraphicConverter doesn't support layers like Photoshop, although it can add an alpha channel to existing images when you want to add transparency. Its toolkit includes all the standard brushes, pencils, erasers, paintcans, and text tools that you expect in graphics editors, with all the usual options, but some of them aren't entirely intuitive.

I still haven't figured out how to use GraphicConverter's tools to replace more than one color in a bitmap image with transparency, for example, and the huge PDF manual that ships with the app isn't designed to give easy answers. When I want to make large multicolored areas of an image become transparent, I generally quit GraphicConverter and use the tools in Axalis IconWorkshop (www.axialis.com), which runs only under Windows. If you know how to do perform this feat, please post the technique in the comments.

Good as it is, GraphicConverter has a few small areas that could use improvement. When you paste another image over an existing image, it isn't easy to resize the pasted-in part so that it fits exactly the way you want it to into the existing image. GraphicConverter is one of the few Mac apps that can read the old WordPerfect Graphics (WPG) format?but it only reads version 1 of that format, not version 2. Open-source code is available for converting WPG2 files, and I hope it may get incorporated into future versions.

Support and Versions
I'm impressed by the way the author of GraphicConverter responds to questions. A few months ago I found an obscure bug in the way the app saves images in Apple's icon format, and sent an e-mail to the author with some sample files that illustrated the problem. The vendor not only fixed the bug but also improved the feature by updating it to support Apple's latest icon format, which includes high-resolution images that Apple's own Icon Composer tool still doesn't support.

You can buy GraphicConverter for the same price from the Mac App Store and from the vendor's web site. If there's any chance you'll need to open images in obscure, obsolete formats, buy the version from the vendor's site. In order to conform to Apple's severe security restrictions, the vendor had to omit support for at least one obscure format?the ECW format that used to be a common standard for satellite images of the earth?in the App Store version, although the vendor's own version continues to support it.

To keep my complaints in perspective, remember that I've complained about a tiny proportion of the enormous feature set of this generally superb and unparalleled app. GraphicConverter does more things with more formats than any other application I've ever seen on any platform, and if you're a non-professional who needs high-quality image manipulation and conversion on a Mac, it's both the only choice and our Editors' Choice.

In their quest to leave a smaller environmental ?footprint,? employees of Greif, a Delaware, Ohio-based industrial packaging products company, are trying to outdo each other when it comes to energy-efficient work habits.

For four months, 60 of the organi?zation?s employees participated on two teams that competed to identify energy wasters and control energy use at work. To do so, they used ?modlets??moni??tors that reveal how much energy devices plugged into an electrical outlet are using and can automatically shut them off at pre-programmed times.

That helped employees learn about ?phantom power,? the electricity that an appliance or computer uses even when it?s turned off, and about how much energy they waste by failing to unplug or shut down electronics when they?re not in use.

The two teams competed to save more energy and learn more about energy than the other, earning badges and points for participating in learning activities. For example, one activity encouraged participants to identify active and standby power states of the devices monitored by their modlets.

Result: Even after the competition has ended, employees are still talking about energy savings, using less energy and convincing their colleagues to do the same.
