Wednesday, February 20, 2013 11:17 PM EST

Congratulations to Bristol Central wrestler Tyler Burrow (132 pounds), Terryville wrestler Elliott Wilion (120 pounds) and Bristol Central distance runner Spencer Johnson for winning state titles this past week.

Tyler did his at the Class L wrestling meet and Eliott won his in Class S, while Spencer earned his at the Class L indoor track and field meet.

Tyler and Spencer have received ?AOW? honors already this season, so Elliott is automatically lined up for this coming Tuesday?s announcement.

Scharpf jumping

for Mt. Saint Mary?s

Corie Scharpf, a 2012 graduate of Terryville High, is currently attending Mt. St. Mary?s University where she is studying physical therapy and competing in the high jump for the school?s indoor track team.

Her best finish was a first place at the Bucknell Mini Meet last month, where she leaped 5-3. Five schools took part in the meet, Bucknell, Mt. Saint Mary?s, Hagerstown, Bloomburg and Gwynedd-Merc, with unattached athletes also competing.

Her best jump of the season as a freshman is 5-3, and she?s done that twice, the other being at the Patriot Games in late January. She went 5-2.5 at the Gulden Invitational, also in January. A two-time indoor and two-time outdoor state champion while in high school, her official best was 5-4 last year, while going 5-5 in practice.

Michelle Guerette

Tramps honoree

When the Bristol Tramps honor those who have made contributions to Bristol sports on April 12 at the Aqua Turf Club, among those to be recognized will be Michelle Guerette.

A tennis captain at Bristol Central, she went on to take up the sport of rowing in college, which led her to the U.S. Olympic team. In 2008, she finished second in single skulls to Rumyana Neykova of Bulgaria, doing so by less than half a second. A two-time Olympian, having competed in women?s quadruple skulls in 2004, she?s been Bristol?s most successful Olympian since the Josephson twins, Karen and Sarah, won gold in 1992 in duet synchronized swimming.

Did you know?

Two Bristol natives hold the single-game basketball scoring mark of 45 points at the University of Hartford, Gary Palladino in 1966 and Mark Noon in 1978, a record which stands the test of time in being first set 47 years ago.

The pair are connected in other ways too. Gary, now coach at Notre Dame in West Haven, coached Mark at both St. Paul during the mid-1970?s and later at the University of Hartford.

ECSU is 19-7

Eastern Connecticut State is 19-7 in men?s basketball and as written before, two area players have contributed much to this year?s success. Terryville?s Mike Garrow, a junior, is second in team scoring (14.2), second in 3-point shooting (.426) and third in rebounds (5.3). Canton?s Chris Robitaille, the grandson of Bristol?s Jack Hines, is a senior and is leading the team in rebounding (8.2) and field goal percentage (.558), while third in scoring (13.6).

Some of last week?s best quotes

?When I came to (Central) wrestling was big time here, and I was fortunate enough to contribute to the tradition.?

Bristol Central wrestling coach Brian Archibald last week. He is retiring after 11 years to spend more time with his young sons.

?(Logan) Marchi, (Reid) Morin, (D.J.) Rodriguez and (Jordan) Rowley, they all did a good job touching the ball and finishing shots.?
