An Afghan soldier turned his gun on American troops at a checkpoint in the country's east, killing two Americans and at least two fellow members of Afghanistan's army in a shooting that marked both the continuance of a disturbing trend of insider attacks and the 2,000th U.S. troop death in the long-running war, officials said Sunday.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">The string of insider attacks is one of the greatest threats to NATO's mission in the country, endangering a partnership key to training up Afghan security forces and withdrawing international troops.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Saturday's shooting took place at an Afghan army checkpoint just outside a joint U.S.-Afghan base in Wardak province, said Shahidullah Shahid, a provincial government spokesman.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">"Initial reports indicate that a misunderstanding happened between Afghan army soldiers and American soldiers," Shahid said. He said investigators had been sent to the site to try to figure out what happened.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">An Afghan official speaking on condition of anonymity said three Afghan soldiers were killed in the clash. It was not clear if the assailant was among the dead.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">The attack happened about 5 p.m. in Sayd Abad district, Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman Gen. Zahir Azimi said in an emailed statement. He did not provide further details, saying he would wait for a report from investigators.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">NATO forces announced the assault early Sunday morning, saying only that it was "suspected insider attack" and that a NATO service member and civilian contractor were killed.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">One U.S. official confirmed that the service member killed was American, while another confirmed that the civilian was also American. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the nationality of the dead had not yet been formally announced.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Afghan soldiers and policemen ? or militants in their uniforms ? have gunned down more than 50 foreign troops so far this year, eroding the trust between coalition forces and their Afghan partners. Tokyo city officials intending to buy tiny islands at the center of a longtime territorial dispute with China will travel by boat on Saturday to survey the area ahead of the purchase they hope will bolster Japan's claim.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">The five uninhabited islands in the East China Sea that are controlled by Japan but also claimed by China and Taiwan have become a major symbol of patriotic pride for some people in China and Japan. They are near key sea lanes, and are surrounded by rich fishing grounds and untapped natural resources.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara has already raised 1.45 billion yen ($19 million) in private donations over the last several months to buy the islands in the East China Sea, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, from individual Japanese owners.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Ishihara, a popular nationalist and prize-winning fiction writer, told reporters Friday he had spoken with Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, and offered to turn over ownership to the central government for free.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">The Japanese think having the government own the islands will strengthen their control over them, and send a tougher message to China. Noda said he would consider but did not have an immediate reply, according to Ishihara.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">The city government says the purpose of the trip, composed of a team of 25 experts and officials, is to survey the area to assess real estate value in preparation for the purchase. The central government did not grant permission to land on the islands, possibly to avoid a flare-up of tensions with China. Put on your most cuddly clothes, hide your cellphone and laptop. Just veg out, going between naptime and moments of delicious inactivity.</p> <p><strong>Tip:</strong> Don?t move. Just lie there. Choose one day this weekend, rent a bunch of cheesy films, buy the sort of junk food that would make a teenage girl?s sleepover dreams comes true (pizza! chips! licorice!) and just eat and watch bad movies until your heart?s content!</p> <p>If you have kids, they will think it is the most awesome day ever. And you will have tons of fun just being childish and carefree for once.</p> <p><strong>Tip:</strong> Don?t be hard on yourself the next day! Go on a tour. Buy kitschy local souvenirs. Enjoy your city like an outsider and you might get a better perspective of it.</p> <p><strong>Tip:</strong> Walk everywhere if you can. Many tourists don?t rent cars or know their way around a town. Try to absorb your city in a different way.</p> <hr/><p><strong>2. Whatever you do, try to remember what life was like without all these devices and social media networks to keep us constantly, sometimes annoyingly, connected with everything.</p> <p><strong>Tip:</strong> Your television counts too. Totally disconnect from everything and just sit observing life going by. It?s pretty entertaining.</p> <hr/><p><strong>1. Make an ice-y cold carafe of cucumber-mint water, make a couple of face masks from produce in your refrigerator, and turn your shower into a steam room.</p> <p>Massage yourself or the people you love with essential oils, scrub yourself with sweet-smelling salts, listen to relaxing music, and just really treat yourself like the Queen or King that you are!</p> <p><strong>Tip</strong>:<em> Relax</em> don?t do it.
